How to Apply Henna on Hair?

Henna is an alternative for dyeing your hair instead of colourful dyes which damage your hair with chemicals. Henna gives a reddish-brown colour to your hair. Though henna doesn’t have colour options like the ordinary hair dyes, it has many benefits and hence is more preferred.

Applying henna to hair is a tedious and lengthy process one needs to be very careful and patient while doing so. The steps for applying Henna to hair are as follows:

  1. MIXING: Henna comes in powder form and water should be mixed with it, before applying it to hair. Lukewarm water is more suited for this. The amount of water can differ and more water can be added to it steadily as and when required. The average amount of water is half of the henna when measured through a cup. Soak the powder in water before applying, in a bowl wrapped with plastic or is with a cover for overnight. The container should be an old one which is not in use anymore or a steel one from which henna is effortless to wash off. When you soak it, make sure that the consistency is like that of a thick cake batter. While applying it on hair, the density ought to be similar to that a paste, you can add some more water for that.

  1. CARE BEFORE APPLYING HENNA: Wash your hair before applying henna this will eliminate all the dirt, oils and styling products from them and let them dry naturally. Shampooing before henna also makes it easy for the hair to absorb the henna. Do not use conditioner as the oils in it can prevent the henna from reaching the roots. Apply coconut oil or petroleum jelly or body butter all over the forehead, neck and ears. This will protect your face from getting henna stains. Comb your hair, with a wide-toothed brush this will free them from any knots and tangles. Make sure you use gloves while applying henna and wrap yourself from neck and below in a plastic drape or robe or any cloth. Applying henna is messy and henna gets everywhere as it keeps on falling and spreading. It is better to protect your skin from getting stained by henna as they don’t come off soon.

  1. APPLY HENNA: Use a flat brush to apply the now paste-like henna. Divide your hair into sections and clip them as per your convenience. Make sure you leave the centre or the crown section of hair loose as that’s the part from where you will start applying henna. Start putting henna with a brush from the scalp or roots to down the length of your hair. As you proceed down the length of your hair, twist your hair and shape it into a bun. Hair will stay like that due to liquidy paste-like texture of henna without any clip, but you can use one if you feel the need. Continue this from the crown region to the side hair and keep on wrapping your hair in the bun. In the end, give some touch-up of henna at the places you feel it is required or where you missed.

  1. CARE AFTER APPLYING HENNA: Once henna is applied all over your hair, wear a plastic cap or wrap your hair with cling plastic leaving your ears. The wrap will help henna set as the plastic will keep it warm and moist. Let it stay for 2-4 hours or more if you want the colour to be more vibrant. Then wash your hair like you usually would with shampoo and conditioner. The henna will take an approximate of 24 to 48 hours to develop accurately from orange to a deeper brown-reddish shade.
